UPDATE: Power restored through North Thompson area

A storm system that rolled through the region has caused power outages and left water pooling on highways.

THOMPSON-OKANAGAN – More than 10,000 customers without power from Kamloops through north of Valemount early this morning saw it restored by 9:30 a.m. while another 7,000 saw power restored early in the morning following a storm through much of the region overnight.

A broken crossarm on a transmission line around 3:30 a.m. left residents in Kamloops, Sun Peaks, Heffley Creek, Barriere, Clearwater, Blue River and Valemount without power. B.C. Hydro had power restored to all customers by 9:30 a.m., nearly three hours ahead of their estimated restore time. Many schools in the area faced closures because of the power outage as well.

Several other outages around the region overnight are being attributed to the storm, with trees down across wires in Kamloops, Lake Country, Vernon and Sicamous affecting a total of nearly 7,000 customers. Those outages were all restored before 6 a.m.

Heavy winds accompanied a thunderstorm that hit Penticton around midnight and a short time later heavy rain fell over Kelowna. Heavy rain in the Vernon and Shuswap areas has also led to water pooling on highways 97, 97A, 97B and 6EW.

Environment Canada is calling for highs of 22-24 Celsius with a chance of thunderstorms throughout the region today. The rest of the week will also see temperatures hovering near the seasonal normals of 19-21 C. This sudden change comes on the heels of record breaking temperatures this weekend.
