Forensic specialist Cpl. France Burke arrived at a crime scene on 3333 South Main St. in Penticton where just seven hours earlier police found a woman lying dead in her bedroom. It was 8:25 a.m. when Cpl. Burke entered the family home and began recording all the details that would help explain how and why Lynn Kalmring was fatally shot earlier that morning.
Burke described the crime scene to the jury in Kelowna Supreme Court today on the third day of the trial for Keith Gregory Wiens, charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of his common law partner Lynn Kalmring.
Aside from the dead body of the victim in the master bedroom and a number of items found on the kitchen counter, Burke told the court there were no signs of a fight or damage to be found in the home.
“Nothing appeared to be disturbed,” she told the court.
Burke said there was a pack of cigarettes, a butcher's block with a few knives in the corner, a bottle of Vodka and a glass on the kitchen counter.
“It was a quarter full,” she said, as well as, “a glass containing some clear liquid.”
Burke said the fingerprints were Wiens's.
There were also some financial documents sitting on the counter.
“The document I believe was a bill,” Burke said.
On the island of the kitchen Burke said she found “a large amount of American bills” totalling more than $2,000US dollars. Sitting on top of the money was an engagement ring, Burke said.
Crown prosecutor Colin Forsyth told the court the financial documents and glass of vodka were of particular interest and he would have more questions about them.
Before arriving at the crime scene, Burke was called to the Penticton detachment where she took evidence from Wiens. She took swabbings for gunpowder from his hands and face, as well as three pieces of clothing. One of those items was underwear Wiens had been wearing that night and tested positive for a blood stain.
