POLICE BEING INVESTIGATED
KELOWNA - The Kelowna RCMP is being investigated by an independent agency after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle fleeing a police pursuit early this morning.
Kelowna Mounties disclosed no information about the incident publicly, but the Independent Investigations Office confirmed that it's investigating the incident in Rutland near the intersection of Dundas and Dundee. The pedestrian was 'seriously injured' according to the independent investigators.
According to a release on its website, at approximately 12:30 a.m., police were conducting a road check when a vehicle failed to stop. Police pursued until the fleeing vehicle struck the pedestrian. The injured person was transported to hospital with undisclosed injuries.
The Independent Investigators Office was notified at 12:58 a.m., and they sent a traffic reconstructionist.
The IIO is an independent agency tasked with investigating any incident where someone suffers serious harm because of police involvement.
Calls to the RCMP and the IIO were not returned as of 4:14 p.m.
