KAMLOOPS — Only two more editions of the Kamloops Daily News will hit news stands before the paper closes the doors for good.

After more than 80 years publishing in the city the Daily News confirmed this morning that Friday will be the final day of office hours with the final edition coming out Saturday.

On Monday staff were informed Glacier Media had filed to close the newspaper within 60 days. The union then met with the company to hammer out the details, including the official closing date. In total 55 staff members as well as some contract drivers and carriers are now out of work.

While some people have taken to Twitter to openly question the decision and share their shock a city of nearly 90,000 could no longer support a daily newspaper publisher Tim Shoults says the paper has faced financial troubles and they had no other choice.

“We worked quite diligently... We added new special features and publications and reduced costs in every department,” Shoults said. “In the end it was the only option we had.”

The paper recently asked for readers to share their stories about the Daily News for the final edition and staff have been sharing pictures and moments on Twitter and Facebook as they clean out their desks.
