Council to look for finishing touch for Lorne Street project?

With many upgrades for Lorne Street either in the works or already completed, Kamloops City Council will get a chance to ask local artists to design an artistic entrance feature and a sign for one of the entrances to Riverside Park.

Council will be asked at Tuesday's meeting to allow the Arts Commission to put a call out for expression of interest under the Arts Commission by-law that focuses on developing and promoting arts within the city.

A maximum investment of $75,000 has been recommended by staff and those funds are to be carried forward from the 2012 capital budget.

Over the last year and a half hydro lines moved underground, a new roundabout was installed at 3rd Avenue, the roadway was repaved, brickwork was installed and sidewalks were widened, in addition new fencing, signage and landscaping was installed along the sidewalk bordering Riverside Park. Plans for a public art installation on the roundabout and restructuring of the intersection at 1st Avenue and Lorne Street are also being planned for later this year.

The proposed restructuring of the 1st Avenue and Lorne Street intersection is the third phase of the project and will see esthetic improvements at the train underpass as well as a change in traffic flow, improved pedestrian crossings and three-way traffic lights. Little feedback was given on the project at a recent public information session and the project is expected to come before council later this month with the hope that construction could take place over the summer.
