Child psychiatric unit to be renovated

The child psychiatric ward at Royal Inland Hospital is in line for renovations following a request for proposals sent out this week.

KAMLOOPS – Renovations of the child psychiatric unit have taken a step forward after Interior health put out a request for proposals for consultant services.

The renovations will help Royal Inland Hospital better meet the needs of both psychiatric and general pediatric patients

“These renovations will help ensure the environment at Royal Inland is safe and comfortable for some of our youngest and most vulnerable patients,” health minister Terry Lake said in a release Tuesday.

Interior Health is looking to transform two existing psychiatric inpatient rooms, a consultation area and the staff room in the unit to an integrated space with a comfortable lounge for the kids, a private consultation room, a new quiet room and a dedicated washroom, shower and nurse's station..

An existing outdoor recreational area off of the unit will also be renovated to create a more welcoming space.

“Today’s announcement is another example of continued investment in RIH as the tertiary referral site for Kamloops and the surrounding area,” says Interior Health Board Chair Norman Embree. “These services help young people not only within Kamloops but from across the region.”

Budgets and timelines will be finalized once planning is complete.
