UPDATE: 1:45 p.m. Dec 5

VERNON - The water main break on 31st Avenue between Highway 97 and 33rd Street has been repaired and flushed, but the roadway remains closed for repairs.

All residents and businesses should have water again, though they are advised to run cold water until it clears. Those with health concerns may want to drink boiled water or a safe alternative.

UPDATE: 12 p.m. Dec. 5

VERNON - The Vernon Public Art Gallery has closed due to a broken water line outside the building.

Executive director Dauna Kennedy Grant says water flooded in throughout the building and they are currently assessing whether there was any damage to art. Restoration crews are on site with dehumidifiers and space heaters to dry out the building.

She hopes to open the doors to the public tomorrow.

Original story

VERNON - Crews are hard at work on 31st Avenue in front of the art gallery where a main water line broke early this morning.

Zee Marcolin, utilities engineer with the Regional District of North Okanagan, says crews have isolated the break and are conducting repairs.

Marcolin says a couple of businesses do not have water at the moment, and one lane of traffic on 31st Avenue is closed. It is expected to reopen by 10 a.m.

Customers in the downtown Vernon and Mission Hill areas may have noticed low water pressure and dirty water coming from their taps, but these are only temporary effects. Customers are asked to run their cold water taps until the water clears.

At this time, the cause of the break is not known, though Marcolin expects the repairs to be completed by noon today. You can check the Regional District of North Okanagan’s website for updates.
