B.C. Liberals get Stockwell Day support

Former Conservative MP Stockwell Day gave his support for Penticton MLA candidate Dan Ashton and Liberal party at a fundaiser yesterday.

Stockwell Day says he supports B.C. Liberal candidate Dan Ashton because he doesn't want the NDP to win the provincial election.

Day says B.C. cannot afford the NDP being in charge again. The former federal Conservative MP was onboard the SS Sicamous last week attending a campaign fundraiser with Ashton and more than 100 supporters.

The visit was part of Day's week-long tour across the province supporting the B.C. Liberal party. On Monday night he was with Premier Christy Clark at a fundraising event. Day also visited Vernon, Salmon Arm, Kamloops and Merritt.

The long time local MP, Conservative cabinet minister and former Conservative leader was not alone in fearing an NDP-led government. Conservative MP Dan Albas was onboard as well.

"When we had 10 years of NDP, life stood still," Albas said. He also supports Ashton and calls the mayor a strong candidate.

Penticton MLA Bill Barisoff was behind Ashton and said he "endorses Dan fully."

"Our job in Penticton is to make sure Dan is elected."

Some have asked Day why he is not supporting the provincial BC Conservative party. The former MP said "you have to look at the bigger picture."

He explained the Liberal party is the only one capable of keeping the NDP out of office. When he was Alberta's finance minister and the NDP held the reins of B.C., Day saw an influx of resources and talent flow east into Alberta.

He said he supports the Liberal party because their financial plans make the most sense.

In an election, sometimes a person supports the candidate, the leader or the party.

Day said this time around he supports all three.
