KAMLOOPS - Avalanche-control work will forced about a three-hour closure of a major highway linking B.C.'s south coast and southern Interior on Saturday morning.

The Transportation Ministry says the closure of Coquihalla Highway 5 will began at 7 a.m. The route re-opened around 10 a.m.

The closure allowed crews to use helicopters to drop explosives into the snowpack in avalanche paths and clean up any deposits that reached the highway.

Detours were available to motorists at Highway 1 at Kamloops and Hope, or via Highway 8 and Highway 1 at Merritt.

The ministry says it may periodically close other highways throughout the weekend because of avalanche control work.

Updates on highway and road conditions will be available on the Drive B.C. website.

- This story was updated at 10:29 a.m. to reflect the highway's reopening.
