VERNON - The RCMP was busy over the weekend with multiple reports of arson taking place in the city.

A recycle bin was lit on fire near H&L Glass at 2809 45th Avenue while the fire department were at the scene of a second fire in a garbage bin at Vernon Auto Service at 4708 27th Street. In both cases fires were contained to the bin.

At 1:40 a.m. Saturday, RCMP and the Vernon Fire Department responded to two more arson fires. A stack of wooden pallets at Subway restaurant at 4400 27th Street and a dumpster file in an alley off 29th Street near 45th Avenue.

"In all four cases we were lucky that the extent of the damage was confined to a very small area or stayed in the dumpster," RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk stated.

The Vernon RCMP and the Vernon Fire Department are asking anyone who knows about these fires or sees any suspicious activity in the back alleys to call the police immediately before someone gets hurt or has a major loss to property in the city.
