KAMLOOPS – The Kamloops Voters Society wants to know where you stand on the details of the proposed Ajax mine and how it could impact the city.
The society says the goal of the survey is to gather information from a wider group of people than previous surveys, and to provide information that may be of interest to residents. By asking residents to participate they hope people will take the time to think about Ajax and the impact it could have on the city, including opportunities and issues that may come up if it moves forward.
Society president Brad Harrison says the hope is to get people talking, to generate discussion about a very important topic.
“This is an important decision, no matter which way it goes,” Harrison says of the proposed mine. “This could be the most important decision we make as a generation.”
To help get the word out and encourage more people to take part, the society has partnered with community groups around the city. Word on the street is not enough information has been provided, and Harrison hopes the survey will get enough people asking questions that the necessary information will be provided.
Harrison also notes the society is focused on having as neutral a survey as possible to engage more people and allow the results to come through more clearly.
This is not the first survey to focus on Ajax, a four-day survey by Chad Moats of Roundabout Communications and Consulting in March had only 400 people take part, the majority against allowing the proposed mine to go ahead. At the time Moats admitted that some people were concerned over sharing information online, which led to the lower number of participants.
The 20-question, five-minute survey is strictly online and can be completed anytime before Monday, Oct. 14. The results will be shared at the society's annual general meeting on Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. The full results will be posted afterwards.
