Having a subject matter expert who can answer your questions can save you both time and money. Roofing is no different. If you have questions, then you are in luck—Vernon's Torchcraft Roofing have answers for the most-asked roofing questions for you.

Torchcraft Roofing has been caring for Okanagan Valley roofs for over 15 years, and owner-operator Vaughn Hackworth has worked on roofs for over 30 years. There is not much that Vaughn has not installed, repaired, or replaced in the roofing world, and he is more than happy to share that knowledge with his clients. So much so that his Office Manager Karen puts every prospective client in contact with Vaughn for an on-site, in-person visit to discuss the project.

Getting the Facts From the Experts is Free

"Our clients find us online or from referrals, but from there, I put them straight into contact with Vaughn," Karen tells me. "He insists on the person-to-person, on-site style of answering questions." Meeting with prospective clients at their home or business costs the client nothing (all quotes at Torchcraft are free). Vaughn believes this is the best way to build trust and ensure the most accurate quote.

So, what are the most common questions that Vaughn hears? "Torchcraft Roofing is well known as the company that handles flat roofs—specifically, torch-on roofing applications, so most of the questions I get are related to this." Vaughn says that it's common for people to think they don't have a "flat" roof, but they do. In the industry, a roof is considered flat if it has less than a 3/12 pitch; essentially, for every 12 inches of length, the roof pitch rises three inches. There are a lot of homes and businesses in the Okanagan that fit that description.

What Roofing Style is the Best?

Vaughn says every type of roofing material has its merits, but only in the intended application. While Torchcraft can tackle pretty much any roofing project, flat roofs (torch-on waterproof membranes) are their specialty. They recommend IKO - a respected Canadian company for the system they use—whose top-quality roofing products are manufactured in Calgary. With these fantastic Canadian-made products, Torchcraft has developed a reliable system of sealing and waterproofing roofs.

Answering the Misconceptions Around Flat Roofs

There are a lot of misconceptions about flat roofs. The biggest misconception is that a flat roof is more prone to leaks or other problems, but Vaughn assures us that is just not true.

"Absolutely not. A well-built flat roof done right is 100% waterproof, with no chance of leaking, and a 30-year lifespan is not unrealistic." Pitched roofs should get material specific to that roof style, says Vaughn, and the same principle applies to flat roofs. Very specific methods are required for sealing a flat roof.

Vaughn informs us that shingles and metal roofing are fine, but they do have limitations. Shingles are intended for a roof pitch that forces the water to run downhill, allowing the roof to shed water. There is not an impermeable waterproof membrane in place, though—a fact that surprises homeowners. If anything delays or prevents a pitched roof from shedding water, leaks can happen —but not so with torch-on waterproofing systems.

Torchcraft is happy to quote on shingle roofs, but torch-on waterproof roofs have become a niche market for them. Part of the reason for this is that the industry has changed in the last few years; previously, 'tar and gravel' was a common way to seal roofs. Insurance companies now may request an inspection and age expectancy report for a tar-and-gravel roof over 20 years old, and recommend replacing with torch-on (Torchflex), EPDM or TPO.

"A potential client will call us and say they want us to come and look at their roof, but as soon as they tell me it is a tar and gravel system, I have to inform them it's time for a new roof—without even looking at it. Insurance companies are forcing their replacement."

Newer methods, such as the system Torchcraft Roofing uses are the industry standard now. They are so good, in fact, that Torchcraft offers a 25-year guarantee on its work. Every torch-on roofing project they tackle gets that same warranty—whether it is residential, new construction, strata, or commercial.

Pre-poured Concrete Waterproofing for New Builds

At Torchcraft Roofing, waterproofing doesn’t stop at the roof. Waterproofing concrete is also part of what Vaughn and his team offer. The waterproofing membrane is installed before the concrete is poured. If you are a general contractor, please contact us for a quote.
