Healthy living, as we all know, is a long-term, life-long commitment and not a once a year kind of undertaking. Taking it one step at a time can make the transition to healthy living manageable and much more likely to stick.
There are a number of factors that contribute to living healthfully; starting with what food, drink and even supplements we consume.
Keeping a food diary can certainly help track what we eat day to day. By being accountable, we can make the changes easier. Alcohol, loaded coffee drinks and soft drinks should be included in a food diary as they can add hundreds of calories a day.
Adding vitamin and mineral supplements into our daily food routine can go a long way with increasing our overall health and adding to our life expectancy, according to pharmacist Kristina Gifford, owner of Kipp-Mallery Pharmacy-IDA in Kamloops.
“It’s a whole other realm of medicine called functional medicine. Supplements take into consideration the body as a whole. Supplements can be part of a combination of traditional and functional medicine,” says Gifford, who has just started offering the Pro-Wellness line of supplements in her three Kamloops locations. Pro-Wellness is only offered through PCCA compounding pharmacies.
Supplements such as vitamin C, D and multi vitamins, probiotics, minerals such as iron and magnesium, amino acids and herbal or plant based products can all play a part in optimum health. Magnesium for example, says Gifford, can ease muscle cramps and aid in sleep as it relaxes you and makes it easier to fall asleep.
It seems that in this fast-paced world, many people are chronically stressed. “If we are always under stress, our adrenals don’t fully recover. Supplements can help with that. Supplements can work short or long term. Everybody can benefit from some type of supplement, but it is very patient-specific and is dependent on nutrition, lifestyle, exercise, stress levels and amount of sleep a person gets.”
A balanced diet and exercise are key components to functional living. Being sure to use all your healthcare resources is vital. Gifford stresses that the doctor and pharmacist need to ensure medications and supplements don’t interfere with one another.
When considering supplements, Gifford emphasizes the importance of reading labels. “Supplements need the NPN certification. This assures Health Canada has approved the ingredients.”
Overall long-term health should also include at least two and a half hours per week of moderate intensity aerobic activity or one hour and 15 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, plus muscle-strengthening activities at least two days per week, according to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
Keeping an eye on your BMI, body mass index, to see if you’re overweight according to your height and activity level, giving consideration to your mental health status and paying attention to the amount of sleep, round out a healthy lifestyle.
