Business Spotlight

From Farming to Refrigeration

Don and Brock Nicklas ensure they will provide the best product and affordability to keep your home efficient, warm and cool.

You could say his dad chose his career path for him, but it’s not work that Don Nicklas regrets getting into.

As the owner of KVA Mechanical Ltd. in Kamloops, the 74-year-old Nicklas shows no sign of retirement as he continues to get enjoyment out of running his company, as well as working on sites installing heat pumps, furnaces and refrigeration, alongside his two sons Brock and Chad.

“If I can’t help someone make their home comfortable and efficient, there’s no point in me doing this anymore,” says Nicklas, who treats every client’s home as if it were his own.

The multiple journeyman ticket holder didn’t always plan to go into this line of work. Nicklas grew up on a farm near Simpson, Saskatchewan. It was in the farming province that Nicklas’s father eventually purchased a hotel, establishing Nicklas’s career.  It was his dad who enrolled him in refrigeration schooling, to which he now thanks his dad for doing, so he could maintain the hotel’s heating and refrigeration systems. It was not something he really wanted to do, but as it turned out, it was a smart path to take.

After three decades of being in business, Nicklas says the goal of KVA is to keep families comfortable and happy in every season with their expertise advice, installation and maintenance of heating, cooling and refrigeration services throughout the Thompson Nicola region.

“For 30 years, we have been providing professional heating and air conditioning services. With a combined 20 tickets, our expertise delivers peace of mind to homeowners looking for quality HVAC, furnace, air condition and refrigeration services,” says Nicklas.

Something Nicklas is quite passionate about is installing solar panel systems and LG heat pumps for clients, as these are both extremely efficient and money-saving.

“With solar panels electrical costs are cut way down and you usually end up with a bank of stored power,” explains Nicklas, who says those using propane to fuel their homes see the largest savings.

Heat pumps are also an incredible way to cool and heat your home and are effective at heating when temperatures dip as low as -25 degrees.

“Most furnaces are at 60/70 per cent efficiency. Heat pumps are 300 to 400 per cent efficient so it doesn’t take long to recover your cost if you install a heat pump.”

In an effort to make installing the best and most efficient heating and cooling systems, Nicklas now offers his clients financing for homeowners. This is offered in three to five year terms for residential homes, while commercial financing is also available. Financing options are offered interest free.

“Our financing is flexible for clients; tailored to suit each customer. Thirty per cent down is required, and then we work out a monthly payment plan,” explains Nicklas. “We try to be as decent as we can be with financing. We’re building a business around people saving money.”

Nicklas is also building a business around quality work, exceeding customer’s expectations and solid rapport with clients.

One of the KVA team would be happy to come by to provide a free estimate and evaluation. They provide services to all surrounding areas as far as Lillooet, Chase and Clearwater. Contact kvamechanical@gmail.com, or visit their website, www.kvamechanical.com
