iN DISCUSSION: Hot takes on cold facts

May 06, 2025 - 12:00 PM

This is where cold facts yield to the hottest of takes.

Here you'll find reader responses to stories and newsletter editorials, or letters to the editor for the week of May 5. They may have been edited slightly for readability. The opinions expressed are not those of iNFOnews.ca, unless we occasionally add our own style, like this:

Countdown Timer

That's our official Recall Tara Armstrong Countdown Clock!

Tara Armstrong is currently the MLA for Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream. As far as we can tell, she has never lived there, never showed her face or said anything in the election campaign where she rode the coattails of the BC Conservative Party, got elected, then rejected and left the party to serve as an Independent because the Conservatives were too left wing. Now she gets to spout moronic, hateful rhetoric and claim that her riding supports her.

Elections BC says you can recall an MLA if 40% of eligible voters in the riding sign a recall petition — but not for the first 18 months after an election. Some people started an online petition calling for a byelection once she made a shift to Independent, but it won't mean anything until the countdown clock hits zero.

So let the countdown begin!

Wrong equipment at City Gardens jobsite in Kamloops led to concrete collapse

Having worked closely with this industry for almost 20 years, I find this concrete “collapse” concerning. This news is sure to stress out already-committed purchasers and affect future sales. Yes, every other component of the build may be 100% sound, but the fact the contractor overlooked this vital error is not a good sign. — Karen Klein, Kamloops, via email

Arrest warrant issued in Kelowna orchardist family's defamation case

After getting obscene emails from him for over 2 years, I hope they keep him locked up!

Court can weather suggestion accused spends 'rest of his goddamned life in jail': Eby

David Eby needs to get a grip on himself. He is a practising lawyer and the premier of the Province. It’s not appropriate at all for him to prejudge the matter. He used to work as an advocate on Vancouver’s downtown Eastside. He knows full well that capacity to stand trial and potential not criminally responsible by reason of mental disorder arguments will be live issues in this matter. He's not a torch wielding villager. Disappointing really. — William Mastop, via iNFOnews.ca

New short-term rental bylaw means some in Kamloops may not be available

It seems so inconsistent that a short term rental space needs huge building code requirements but if rented long term, it doesn’t. Are we not concerned about the safety of long term tenants. — Claudette Furrer, via iNFOnews.ca

May 7 newsletter editorial on the iNFOnews.ca Tara Armstrong Recall Countdown

One cannot help but wonder if Tara Armstrong was a dump-Trump plant or if she thought the Conservatives were too much of the mango moose-knuckle fan club. Either way, I would love to hear her side of the story, ‘cuz you know, we all want to make sure our votes count, jes' sayn’. — Bent Onhavin, via iNFOnews.ca

The majority of people in that area voted for her, they should now have to live with the consequences. Maybe next time they will actually look at who they are voting for. I’m sorry, I can’t feel any sympathy for them. —  Marti Giroux, via email

BC man's car impounded after doing 218 km/h during ‘engine test’

A very small fine for such dangerous driving and no licence suspension. That’s not much of a deterrent. — Robert Bishop, via iNFOnews.ca

Carney says he pushed back against Trump in private on '51st state' notion

Me thinks Carney should get the message to Trump that Canada is now going to develop its own nuclear weapons. Part of the NATO agreement of course... — Chris Mayhew

BUY CANADIAN: Kelowna weighs in on its role in US trade war

We should all do the best we can to keep our money in Canada, now that the U.S. is run by morons. — Robert Bishop, via iNFOnews.ca

iN RESPONSE to May 5 newsletter editorial on a Shuswap man’s lawsuit to protect his right to opioids for required pain medication

As someone who has been prescribed pills for various reasons, though I’ve long been opposed to even pharmaceutical drugs or even Aspirin, I am simply on this man’s side and against the authorities who are abusing their authority in this case. — Patrick Longworth, via email

As always, extremes come and go, ruining lives along the way. The best plan is to allow the doctors to be doctors and the freedom to know what is best for their patient. No outside committee should be in charge of that relationship. If the odd one has abused, that can be dealt with. The alternative for the patient denied pain relief will be to find that relief in other ways, completely distorting the objective in the first place. The meddling in health care by politicians should end! — Diane Courneyeur, via email

I’m in constant pain from an accident. CBD oil capsules work awesome, better than any antidepressants or prescription meds. My husband was addicted to prescription pain meds. He still lives in constant pain. He chooses nothing. Doctors need to work closely with him. Anti-inflammatory supplements, counselling and the gym. He needs to be monitored and weaned off of them. I’ve seen the lasting effects of prescription pain meds misuse and it’s not pretty. Hard work to get off of it. — Desiree Kaskowski, via email

Former Kelowna MP lost her seat in the election, and her full pension

No offence Tracy but all politicians are paid and get a pension more than they should get. — Kelly Cromie, via iNFOnews.ca

Wow! No wonder these politicians fight so hard to keep their jobs. — Shiree Sherriden, via iNFOnews.ca

You won't see me shedding any tears. — Chris Mayhew, via iNFOnews.ca

I hope we don't see Tracy busking in front of the Dilworth liquor store. You never know, she might have a chance to regain her seat if Carney doesn't do the job well. — Don Morris, via iNFOnews.ca

Nice gig if you can get it! — Bonnie Derry, via iNFOnews.ca

While I'm never distressed about a politician not getting their pension, I do wonder how the election would have been if the riding hadn't been redrawn. — Bill Grigg, iNFOnews.ca

Rockhounds or claim jumpers? Kamloops claim owner frustrated by rock hunters' ignorance

First off this man who owns claims has them everywhere, but they are not marked in any visible way. Most people he comes across he makes a big issue by taking pictures, yelling and calling the cops on them. They are only looking for a couple rocks to add to their collections, not to mine and make big bucks. I would understand if there where clear signs, or what looked to be private makes property, but most of his claims are in places where general hikers and outdoors people could come across and not know they are on his claim. — Carla Sabyan, via iNFOnews.ca

The last line says it all, unfortunately. Some people have no respect for private property, yet they would be the ones freaking out if you decided to camp on their front lawn. — Mike Ruck, via iNFOnews.ca

iN RESPONSE to Wednesday, April 9 newsletter editorial asking what readers are basing their vote on in this federal election

Conservatives, an unknown but positive choice for the hated Liberal party, an unknown but possibly positive choice for the hated NDP, and an unknown for the People's Party of Canada though I actually talked to him in regard to a sign of his, he being the only accountable candidate and then the Green candidate. I voted as I did, I didn't spoil my ballot like some people were suggesting that voters should do if "no acceptable candidates were available". My vote made no difference as an unwanted councillor won for an unwanted political party. — Patrick Longworth, via iNFOnews.ca

Election results are a likely reflection of populations who seem incapable of critically thinking about issues. Polarization, coupled with a lack of comprehension re: current affairs (i.e. threats against our nation from a demented head of state to our south) suggests that Canada is largely a nation of easily lead, and mislead, fools.

Kalamoir Park plan puts big hole in cycling trail from Sicamous to Osoyoos

The "NIMBYs" struck again? Making an all accessible bike path through a park, a park not even completed yet, makes sense. — Patrick Longworth, via iNFOnews.ca

Former B.C. MLA launches CentreBC party, wants to 'push back' against polarization

She lost as an Independent but did she even stop to think that she lost because she was a BC Liberal then a BC United? She is so addicted to politics or the money that she cannot just stop? — Patrick Longworth, via iNFOnews.ca
