This is where cold facts yield to the hottest of takes.
Here you'll find reader responses to stories and newsletter editorials, or letters to the editor for the week of June 23. They may have been edited slightly for readability. The opinions expressed are not those of iNFOnews.ca, unless we occasionally add our own style, like this:
Countdown Timer
That's our official Recall Tara Armstrong Countdown Clock!
Tara Armstrong is currently the MLA for Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream. As far as we can tell, she has never lived there, never showed her face or said anything in the election campaign where she rode the coattails of the BC Conservative Party, got elected, then rejected and left the party to serve as an Independent because the Conservatives were too left wing. Now she gets to spout moronic, hateful rhetoric and claim that her riding supports her.
Elections BC says you can recall an MLA if 40% of eligible voters in the riding sign a recall petition — but not for the first 18 months after an election. Some people started an online petition calling for a byelection once she made a shift to Independent, but it won't mean anything until the countdown clock hits zero.
So let the countdown begin!

RE: Wednesday, June 25 newsletter editorial on measles cases in BC
I am wondering what's next — polio? Tetanus? There was nowhere in my world, at any time that we did not protect our children. Nowhere in my world did we not realize we were also protecting those that could not be vaccinated. The invasion of the World Wide Web in our world gave the conspiracy theorists a platform.
World 'leaders', for want of a different word, have fallen for this. These are people with a perceived position of power. Kennedy, Danielle Smith, Poilievre are a few examples. They are very dangerous to the human race. We have stopped having empathy and compassion and believe the misinformation. I fear we are doomed. — Bonnie O'Neill, via email
I’m not going to get into the anti-vax thing. Rather let’s ask a different question. Who do children belong to? For a growing segment of the right, they are property of the parents. The whole ‘Parent’s Rights’ movement is about people who want to control everything about their child from what they learn, how they think, what gender or sexuality they express.
This is flat out wrong. Parents have custody of their children. If they treat their children badly, or neglect them, the community can take the children away to keep them safe. When seatbelts were first made mandatory (yes, I’m old enough to remember that) some people refused to wear them, but it wasn’t long before refusing to buckle your children in safely led to an investigation from Child and Family Services, or whatever they were called where you lived. Refusing to put seatbelts on your children was child endangerment.
Refusing to vaccinate your child is child endangerment. If parents refuse, it should be reported and investigated.

RE: Monday June 23 newsletter editorial on the impacts of the wealth transfer in probate court
I have worked in law offices all of my career and believe me, when I worked estates, as soon as the death occurred, money hands started to show.
It was sad to see families fighting over money. I am talking years ago, so it really isn’t any different with the boomers now. Without that court system, I think a lot more people would have been wronged. — Marti Giroux, via email

iN NUMBERS: Nearly a quarter of renters in B.C. spend half their income on rent
I hate to say this but a lot of renters, to me, could be renamed whiners. And I am tired of it never being pointed out how owners are not in a much better position. Renters pay their rent and that is where their renter responsibilities end.
On the other hand an owner has (and frankly I think all renters need to ponder this) face: Mortgage payments, property taxes, community bills, upkeep of the buildings, painting and repair, upkeep of the yard, all needing either equipment or hiring service people. Also appliances, either hiring service people or replacing, insurance for the property (mine this year including contents is 1,900 bucks and my house is a little box) plus the roof….if you need to replace your roof you are looking at minimally $15 to 30 thousand. Every ten years you have to replace your hot water tank or you can’t get insurance.
Let's pretend that the mortgage payment is equal to average rent — all the rest is up to the landlord, who we know in BC absolutely don’t get a break on any level. I have always had the ability to rent out part of my house, but I am not crazy. After seeing the hell landlords go through I am like a lot of potential landlords — not on your life.
