iN DISCUSSION: Hot takes on cold facts

FILE PHOTO
May 13, 2025 - 12:00 PM

This is where cold facts yield to the hottest of takes.

Here you'll find reader responses to stories and newsletter editorials, or letters to the editor for the week of May 12. They may have been edited slightly for readability. The opinions expressed are not those of iNFOnews.ca, unless we occasionally add our own style, like this:

Countdown Timer

That's our official Recall Tara Armstrong Countdown Clock!

Tara Armstrong is currently the MLA for Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream. As far as we can tell, she has never lived there, never showed her face or said anything in the election campaign where she rode the coattails of the BC Conservative Party, got elected, then rejected and left the party to serve as an Independent because the Conservatives were too left wing. Now she gets to spout moronic, hateful rhetoric and claim that her riding supports her.

Elections BC says you can recall an MLA if 40% of eligible voters in the riding sign a recall petition — but not for the first 18 months after an election. Some people started an online petition calling for a byelection once she made a shift to Independent, but it won't mean anything until the countdown clock hits zero.

So let the countdown begin!

RE: Wednesday's newsletter editorial on ICBC

Yes, it is horrible. I settled my settlement before the rule change. Even though my claim is still open, they won't cover any massage or chiropractor without a doctor's note each time.
I didn't get a decent claim amount anyway because I'm a stay-at-home mom. Had a doctor who wouldn't tell ICBC what he physically saw. He just threw all the ICBC forms out.
I have met people who have lied about their injuries. I have met people who have milked every dime from them.
People who took advantage ruined it. I feel so heartbroken for the people who need it and have to fight every inch of the way.
I feel sorry for the people whose doctors don't believe them.
Something seriously needs to be done to fix it. Hard enough to try and live life and be in pain all the time. It's a constant reminder. The whole system is completely idiotic.

I have not had to deal with a NO Fault insurance claim. However, there are times when someone is definitely at fault. Why should I have to pay if it is definitely not my fault?
Perhaps a CAP should be put on insurance claims by those who are greedy rather than penalizing all of us!

Sandy Calder, via email

Mr. Jones, you are incorrect when stating that “we all cheered” when ICBC went over to No Fault Insurance.
Only people who have never been the victim of a negligent driver would think that.
ICBC is simply lining their pockets while tying our hands.
I knew this would not be a benefit to drivers… simply a benefit to the bureaucrats.

Canada must maximize use of existing pipelines before building more, minister says

This man needs to go. He contradicts his new boss (pipelines yes Carney says) and then lies about the current capacity which is 76% NOT 40% as he stated. He is NOT the Environment Minister and Carney needs to reel him in or fire him if he for a second wants Canadians to believe what he says. Beyond tired of paying big bucks for these folks to boldface LIE.

Controversial Okanagan MLA doubles down on anti-Indigenous stance

Wow. I would hope we have come a long, long way in terms of developing our views compared to "British Columbians back in the 1800s" whom Armstrong and Brodie say they are following. It wasn't until 1917 that women in BC had the right to vote. I would have thought Ms. Armstrong would at least want to follow that lead? — William Mastop, via iNFOnews.ca

Eby's bill to speed up B.C. projects risks alienating NDP supporters, expert says

The NDP have a majority, if the speaker has to vote to break a tie then so be it. Why would the renegade 3 members who broke away from the Conservatives not vote for this, they say they want to separate themselves from the BC Conservatives so this is their chance to get something done? Moreover, Conservative leader John Rustad says he wants to get things done which are best for BCers and cut red tape by setting aside petty politics, how does he do this by voting against fast tracking projects which he campaigned for? — Mac Gordon, via iNFOnews.ca

Why it's so hard to find locally grown celery in Okanagan, Kamloops

Our family immigrated from Italy to Kelowna in 1893 for the fantastic growing area of the world. Over the years our family grew lots of celery and a rather large farmer Mr. Low grew acres of celery on Swamp Road. Lots was grown in Armstrong also. We should encourage people to grow more celery. Good article. — Domenic Rampone, via email
