KELOWNA - A young girl walking her bike in an intersection has been injured after a hit and run collision in Kelowna this morning.
Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey says in a news release officers received a report shortly before 8:30 a.m. today, May 29, of a hit and run that took place roughly 30 minutes earlier.
Police say a young cyclist reportedly dismounted her bike and stepped off the northwest corner of the sidewalk to walk across Springfield Road, when a vehicle turning right onto Springfield Road from Gordon Drive struck her bike.
The girl's bicycle was damaged beyond repair, and caused her to fall to the ground.
“The young girl, who was shaken from the incident, also sustained some injuries as a result of her fall,” O’Donaghey says. “We are told that the driver of the vehicle involved, pulled around the injured child, stopped momentarily without exiting their vehicle and drove away seconds later.”
Police are trying to reach out and contact witnesses, but they're urging others to come forward with information.
"Bystanders, who were understandably focussed on rushing to the aid of the youth, were unfortunately unable to obtain a licence plate for the now suspect vehicle,” O’Donaghey says.
The suspect vehicle involved is believed to be an off-white or cream coloured Kia Soul with British Columbia licence plates attached with possibly a female driver. The vehicle could have markings or damage to its right passenger side.
This is the second time a cyclist has been hit by a vehicle in Kelowna in two days. A 48-year-old woman was taken to hospital after she collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of Gordon Drive and DeHart Road yesterday, May 28.
