Woman stabbed at Orchard Park mall in Kelowna taken to hospital

A woman was rushed to hospital with knife wounds after being stabbed at a bus station outside Kelowna's Orchard Park Mall yesterday, June 14.

An RCMP officer who was patrolling the area was flagged down by witnesses.

“The officer immediately attended and arrested a male who was being physically detained by two bystanders,” says a Kelowna RCMP news release. “The bystanders had witnessed the attack and quickly jumped into action, disarming the male and pulling him away from the victim.”

The officer provided emergency first aid until the ambulance arrived and took the woman to hospital. She has several injuries but is expected to make a full recovery.

The victim and suspect are known to one another and there is no threat to the public, the release says.

“The suspect was transported to Kelowna cells where he faces several charges including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose,” the news release says.

He is being kept in custody.

“This was a disturbing and violent attack on an individual going about her daily activity,” Const. Mike Della-Paolera, Kelowna RCMP’s media relations officer said in the news release. “The swift actions of the two witnesses and the first aid provided by the attending police officers, were influencing factors in the outcome of this incident.”
