Winter conditions expected on Interior high elevation highways

It may be spring according to the calendar but winter isn’t giving up on upper elevation highways in the Southern Interior.

A sudden return to winter driving tomorrow on the Okanagan Connector, Coquihalla Highway and Highway 3, March 22, has prompted Environment Canada to issue a special weather statement.

A frontal wave of warm air is forecast to move across southern B.C. tomorrow morning, meteorologists say, but it will be followed by a potent cold front that will suddenly drop the temperature and “result in a sudden change from rain to heavy snow over the highways.”

The snow could accumulate quickly and create reduced visibility on the Okanagan Connector from Kelowna to Merritt, the Coquihalla Highway from Kamloops to Merritt and Merritt to Hope, along with Highway 3 from Princeton to Hope through the Allison Pass.

Environment Canada is asking travellers to exercise caution and be aware of rapidly changing road conditions.

For the latest on the special weather statement go to the Environment Canada website here.

The latest road conditions can by found at the Drive B.C. website here.
