Winners of Kelowna’s top citizens awards to be announced virtually in April

Kelowna City Hall

Given COVID-19 restrictions on social gatherings, there will be no gala dinner to honour Kelowna’s 46th Annual Civic and Community Award winners this year.

Instead, the awards will be announced during Kelowna city council meetings over three successive Mondays in April.

First up, on April 12, will be Honour in the Arts, Teen Honour in the Arts and the Bob Giordano Memorial Award for Coach/Sport Administrator of the Year.

The nominees of Honour in the Arts are David Doody, Dustyn Baulkham and Karma Lacoff Nieoczym.

The winner of the Teen Honour in the Arts award will receive a $500 entrance scholarship to UBCO from the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies.

Nominees are Allie Sieben, Julius Brooker and Scotty Berg.

Nominees for the Bob Giordano Memorial Award are Christine Hank, Jenni Duff and Meghan Faust.

Three more award winners will be recognized on April 19.

Champion for the Environment nominees are UBC Okanagan, Columbia Bottle Depots and Anna Warwick Sears.

Corporate Community of the Year Award nominees are RBC Kelowna, Total Restoration and Peter’s Independent Grocer.

Central Okanagan Foundation – Volunteer Organization of the Year nominees are Kiwanis Clubs of Kelowna, Central Okanagan Region Nutrition Society and Elizabeth Fry Society.

The final three awards will be announced on April 26.

Two of the Young Citizen of the Year finalists will each be given a $1,000 scholarships from the Payton and Dillon Budd Memorial Fund Youth Scholarship. The winner will get a $2,000 scholarship.

Nominees are Survinder Momi, Tian Whitehead and Toni Willoughby

Nominees for the Fred Macklin and Sarah Donalda-Treadgold Memorial Award - Citizen of the Year are Craig Siemens, Elaine McMurray and Shannon Gall.

Given the fact that most team-based sports were cancelled this year because of COVID, there won’t be any awards for high school athletes this year.
