Another wildfire has flared up near Kamloops, this time north of the city.
BC Wildfire Service is sending helicopters and an air tanker to the blaze in the Lac du Bois Grasslands area today, July 23. On the slope of Mount Wheeler, it's measured to be less than a hectare as of 12 p.m.
Fire information officer Shaylee Sterns said crews are assessing the fire in the helicopters and the plane before sending a ground crew to the scene.
As of Tuesday afternoon the fire is more than five kilometres north of the Kamloops airport.
It's not clear what caused the fire, but it comes on the heels of two wildfires on the far south end of the city sparked by lightning in a Monday night storm. Those were quickly doused, but wildfire crews are on alert for anymore potential new fires as more than 1,000 lightning strikes were recorded in the Kamloops Fire Centre region in the past 24 hours.
