An air quality warning has been issued for Kamloops today due to wildfire smoke as the mini heat wave continues.
Over the next 24 to 48 hours smoke in South Thompson is expected to affect Kamloops, Ashcroft and Cache Creek. Smoky conditions are expected in the Fraser Canyon including Lillooet and Lytton, according to the Ministry of Environment today, July 30.
The warning comes as a heat wave is working its way through the Southern Interior. There is currently a heat warning as temperatures are expected to hit a high of 38 Celsius today and 35 C tomorrow.
The smoke is coming from an out of control wildfire near Lytton which is currently at 460 hectares. Evacuation alerts over Cantilever Bar wildfire have been imposed by Thompson-Nicola Regional District and three local First Nations communities. The BC Wildfire Service says the fire is highly visible from Highway 1 and motorists should drive with extra caution.
“It's not really all of South Thompson. It's mainly Cache Creek, Ashcroft area and the Fraser Canyon. It's not expected to hit the Okanagan. And it's probably going to disperse a little bit more in the afternoon,” the ministry’s air quality meteorologist Vickie Irish told iNFOnews.ca.
Wildfire smoke conditions can change quickly and vary hour-by-hour.
People have been advised to limit time outdoors, particularly seniors, kids, and people with health conditions.
