UPDATE: Wildfire east of Okanagan Falls reaches 13.8 hectares

A wildfire east of Okanagan Falls has grown from eight to 13.8 hectares in size this afternoon.

The Solco Creek wildfire, located about 1.5 kilometres south of Solco Lake, started July 30, and was reported at 1.5 hectares yesterday morning, July 31.

As of Aug. 1, the fire is still classified as out of control, according to the service's most recent Facebook post.

No structures are threatened and 41 BC Wildfire personnel, three helicopters and heavy equipment are on scene, said fire information officer Gagan Lidhran.

“The fire does have a good water source 500 m from the fire,” she said.

The fire near Okanagan Falls is one of 18 currently burning in the Kamloops Fire Centre. On July 31, 15 new fires were sparked across the fire centre due to lightning, Lidhran said. According to the map, these fires are currently less than 1 hectare in size.

“We do have a lot of crews on standby but we were anticipating this and we are responding to this and we were prepared,” Lidhran said.

Environment Canada predicted thunderstorms yesterday.

Lidhran said more fires might be reported throughout the day and more information will be provided on the wildfires.

The Solco Creek fire is currently the biggest fire in the Kamloops Fire Centre.
