KAMLOOPS - The business climate in Kamloops is proving to be stable and strong according to the city’s annual report for 2017.
The city reported 5,796 active business licenses last year compared to the 5,510 in 2016. The report presented to council on Tuesday, July 17 also shows there was a 20 per cent decrease in the number of businesses closing.
"We've seen a steady increase in the past number of years in all businesses," says Planning and Development manager, Rod Martin.
He explains the increase can be attributed to more people moving to the Kamloops area from the Lower Mainland.
"People are moving to town, there's a good quality of life here, we have affordable housing and people are taking advantage of those things," Martin says.
Martin explains there is a wide range in the types of business licenses the city issued last year, especially businesses in the hi-tech industry.
"There have been a few startups that have been successful at Kamloops Innovation," he says.
In total, the city received 1,215 in business license applications in 2017.
