KAMLOOPS - Showers and thunderstorms in the Kamloops area are expected to give way to clearing skies and summer like conditions this weekend.

Environment Canada issued a weather alert for the South Thompson this morning, May 22, warning of an extended periods of rain and possible flash flooding beginning tonight.

Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says the expected rain "isn't over the top" for this time of year, but the upper low moving into the region could bring between 10 millimetres of rain, and up to 30 mm locally to some areas.

He says a drying and warming trend will begin late Saturday.

The forecast calls for a mix of sun and cloud today, a 60 per cent chance of showers, a risk of a thunderstorm and a high of 24 Celsius. Winds are expected to be west at 20 km/h. Those showers are forecast to continue overnight, along with the risk of a thunderstorm. Kamloops could see rainfall amounts of up to 10 mm with an overnight low of 13 C.

Showery weather is also forecast tomorrow, with a continuing risk of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Another 10 mm of rain could fall, with a high of 22 C and an overnight low of 13 C forecast. Winds are expected to be from the northwest at 30 km/h in the afternoon, with cloudy conditions forecast overnight along with a 40 per cent chance of showers.

Cloudy skies with a 60 per cent chance of showers are expected to linger into Saturday before a clearing trend begins that night, with a high of 20 C and an overnight low of 11 C expected.

Sunday should be sunny with a high of 25 C.

Normal temperatures for this time of year in Kamloops are highs of 23 C and lows of 9 C.
