Westside-Kelowna electoral district could be getting a new name

KELOWNA – While no changes are being recommended to the boundaries of the Westside-Kelowna riding, a new name could be in the works if a recommendation by the B.C. Electoral Boundaries Commission is approved.

The recommendation is part of an assessment of electoral boundaries and affects most of West Kelowna, portions of Westbank First Nation land, part of downtown Kelowna and the majority of the North End.

The report says the commission received varied input for the Kelowna area, with some wanting substantial changes to the boundaries of all three Kelowna districts. Some respondents also suggested a fourth electoral district be created while others wanted the current Westside-Kelowna district to include more of the downtown Kelowna area.

The commission ultimately decided not to recommend any changes to the boundaries of the three Kelowna electoral districts since the populations are similar and they doubt changes would achieve “more effective representation.” The commission is suggesting the name of the riding be changed to Kelowna West.
