West Kelowna teacher charged with sexual exploitation awaiting sentence

Kelowna Law Courts

A former West Kelowna high school teacher who pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a young person is expected to know if jail time awaits him before the new year, but first, his psychiatric assessment has to come in.

Bradley Furman is scheduled to have a revised psychiatric assessment report submitted Oct. 29 and a two-day sentencing hearing will follow soon after.

The revised report was called for after Furman breached the condition of his release following pleading guilty to the charges of exploitation, attempting to pervert justice and three counts of breaching bail conditions.

The child luring, sexual exploitation, sexual assault and an attempt to obstruct justice incidents are alleged to have occurred between March 16 and May 1, 2018. His last day of work with the Central Okanagan school district was in May 2018.

As part of a plea deal, the Crown had agreed to drop several of the charges.

In the months that followed, Furman was released from custody on a $10,000 surety and he faced strict bail conditions, including a ban on going near any school in the Central Okanagan and he’s not allowed to possess a cellphone or any other device that can access the internet.

Due to the nature of the charges, there’s a ban on the identity of the victim.
