KAMLOOPS – The emergency support services team is looking for volunteers to help wildfire evacuees at the emergency reception centre at Thompson Rivers University.
The team needs help from people with office experience to help evacuees complete forms. Most importantly, is an ability to stay calm and compassionate while helping people under a great deal of stress.
"The evacuees are already traumatized and stressed right out, you want to be that calm person for them," Tracey Thacker with Volunteer Kamloops says.
Thacker is helping organize volunteers because of an influx of people stopping by the reception centre at TRU to offer help. She's now tasked with creating a contact list of volunteers and handing that over to the emergency support services team.
Volunteers should be able to show attention to detail and not be easily distracted, be good listeners, have interview or intake skills, and be able to multi-task in a stressful environment.
