WEST KELOWNA – The Ministry of Transportation recently released a side-by-side, before and after video showing the results of a $45 million improvement project on Westside Road.

In the five years since the province announced funding for Westside Road, it has been named B.C.’s Worst Paved Roadway, been at the centre of two major forest fires and was the scene of a high-speed police chase and shootout.

Funding for the notorious road between West Kelowna and Vernon was announced in 2012, but the project wasn't completed until last year.

After a 2013 survey, BCAA proclaimed Westside Road the most unsafe paved road in the province. Reasons given include a lack of safe pedestrian and cycling space, poor road signs and road markings, potholes, crumbling pavement, poorly timed traffic lights and bad overall design.

The ministry describes it now as "a picturesque, two-lane road running along Okanagan Lake."

“Its dramatic beauty and winding roads make it a pretty popular route for motorists of all types," the caption reads. "To keep this road safe and accessible for everyone, we’ve recently widened and realigned 1.2 km of the road between Four Mile Creek and Waterfront Farm.”
