VIDEO: How a Kamloops artist taught herself realism oil painting

Teresa Brownrigg has been perfecting her oil painting skills since 2013. Her work mainly focuses on realistic portraits but she also creates original pieces.

KAMLOOPS - When her metal group 'Gate' broke up back in 2006, lead singer Teresa Brownrigg felt a huge void she needed to fill.

For years, music was the way Brownrigg expressed her feelings and thoughts and when that wasn't there anymore, she decided to look into other ways to express her creativity.

It was through painting where she picked up her fascination with realism oil paintings.

"I just started doing abstract first, I was really interested in colour and form, and I just really loved blending them together," she says, adding that she first started painting with acrylics before switching to oil.

Brownrigg has never been to school for painting, but since 2013 she has taught herself different methods and techniques to better her skills.

"Painting has been huge for me, it's definitely about expression, (before) it was music and as soon as music wasn't prominent in my life, I needed something to do," she says.

Now, the former musician is on the verge of perfecting her skills and offering them as a service to others.

Check out some of Brownrigg's hyper-realistic oil paintings below.
