VERNON - Vernon city council is looking into a possible ban to prevent vehicles from idling on the city's streets.

Council is set to vote on a motion at its Monday, June 10 meeting, which would have city staff draw up an anti-idling bylaw at it's June 10 meeting.

According to the council's agenda, a delegation at it's May 27 meeting has spurred the City to look into implementing anti-idling bylaws. The presentation stated idling contributes to improved air quality and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The staff report recommends council work with the Regional District of North Okanagan and explores a coordinated universal anti-idling bylaw which could be adopted by all jurisdictions in the North Okanagan.

If the motion passes and a bylaw is drawn up, it won't be the first time the City has looked into anti-idling bylaws.

Vernon first started anti-idling legislation in 2004 and adopted a policy that limits the idling of its City vehicles to no more than three minutes in an hour period.

In 2013 the City drafted an anti-idling bylaw which would restrict vehicles idling more than three minutes and impose a $150 fine for breaking the bylaw. The bylaw was redrafted and amended to extend the time to five minutes and fines were dropped to $35, but the bylaw was rescinded and never brought in.
