Vernon to consider two more cannabis stores

VERNON - Vernon could be set to have a dozen pot shops operating within the city if council approves two latest applications.

Two new applications to open non-medical cannabis retail stores will be voted on at council's Monday, May 13 meeting. If the City decides to approve the new applications it will take the number of proposed cannabis stores in Vernon to 12.

The first of the two new applications is slated for 2813A 35 St. in the building that currently holds The Right Cut hairstylists and K9 Grooming. The other application is from Black Crow Herbal Solutions and slated for 2808A 48 Ave. opposite the Village Green Mall.

The City has already approved 10 applications for non-medical cannabis stores. These businesses are now waiting on provincial approval before they can open stores.

The issue of the number of pot shops allowed in the city has been widely debated since applications started coming in following the legalization of recreational cannabis. On April 23, Vernon council passed a motion to limit the number of cannabis shops within the primary and secondary business improvement area to six.

According to the staff report, 169 letters were sent to stakeholders including businesses, property owners and occupants within 30 metres of the proposed stores. They received one letter of no objection, three positive responses, eight negative responses and a 43 signature petition against the 35 Street store.

The 48 Avenue store received one positive response from 168 letters sent out.
