A Vernon woman who has been internationally recognized for her work as an Indigenous scholar has been appointed to Canada’s Senate.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced yesterday, Nov. 10, that Canada’s Governor General Mary Simon appointed Margo Greenwood as an independent Senator, filling a vacancy for British Columbia, according to a press release from the Prime Minister's office.

Greenwood is a researcher, author, and mother with more than 30 years of experience focused on the health and well-being of Indigenous children, families, and communities, according to the news release. She is an Officer of the Order of Canada and has received many awards for her academic, community, and advocacy work.

Greenwood has worked at the University of Northern British Columbia since 1997.

“I am honoured to be appointed as a Senator and look forward to contributing to the work of the Senate in an independent and non-partisan way. My contribution to the Senate is grounded in my commitment to the health and well-being of all people, including Indigenous children and families. I’m proud to bring all of my lived experience to this work,” Greenwood said, in a press release.

Greenwood holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta, a Master of Arts degree from the School of Child and Youth Care at the University of Victoria, and a Ph.D. in Education from the University of British Columbia. She lives in Vernon.
