Cold records shattered in Kamloops and the Okanagan

Yesterday was the coldest Dec. 22 documented in Kamloops and the Okanagan with records tumbling by 5 degrees or more.

Kamloops recorded a low yesterday of -30.2 Celsius, breaking the 1891 record of -25.6 C.

For Kelowna, it got down to -29 C, breaking the record of -25.2 C in 1983 as was the coldest Dec. 22 on record.

In the South Okanagan, Penticton dropped to -22.3 C, breaking its record of -15.8, while Osoyoos got down to 21.8 C, breaking its record cold temperature of -17.5 C.

Salmon Arm also hit -30.2 C, breaking its record of -26.5 C, while Summerland dropped to -23 C, eclipsing its record of -18.5 C.

Vernon didn't break its record for the day and the Environment Canada website doesn't list temperatures for that day.

In all, 40 cold records were broken in B.C. yesterday and 33 in Alberta.

That included Fort Nelson getting down to -43.6 C, Vancouver at dropping to -13.5 C and Victoria was at -8.4 C.

The coldest spot on the list for Alberta was Hendrickson Creek at -45.2 C.

Nine other cold records were broken in Yukon and Northwest Territories with Watson Lake, YT, being the coldest of those at -49.9 C.

The cold snap is breaking with highs of -14 C forecast for Kamloops today and -13 C in Kelowna.

Temperatures should creep above freezing early next week.
