Vernon RCMP are warning sex workers to be careful after a sex worker was sexually assaulted after being picked up last night.

According to Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release, a sex worker was picked up last night, Jan. 13, at around 6 or 7 p.m. in a large white SUV near the 3300 block of 31 Avenue by a Caucasian man in his 20s who then sexually assaulted the woman.

The man then left the woman at Turtle Mountain. The woman made her way back downtown and was found by RCMP volunteers at about 11 p.m.

Police believe there may have additional people inside the vehicle who were possibly involved.

"We are releasing this information to the public so vulnerable persons, especially those involved in a high-risk lifestyle, are aware for their own safety when engaging with individuals they do not know," Vernon RCMP spokesperson Const. Chris Terleski said in the release.

"The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP’s Special Victims Unit is assisting with the investigation, and we are collaborating with our partner agencies to proactively get this message out."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP at 250-545-7171 and quote file number 2023-578.
