RCMP cordoned off a Vernon parking lot for approximately 10 hours yesterday after an officer suspected there were explosives in a parked vehicle.

Police were called to a report of a man passed out in a vehicle in the parking lot for several businesses on 43 Avenue including Dollar Tree and Habitat for Humanity ReStore at around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12.

When a suspected explosive was found inside the vehicle during the arrest, the area was cordoned off and the RCMP explosives device unit in the Lower Mainland was called.

“An examination of the device confirmed the presence of explosive material and that it likely had the potential to cause serious injury if activated,” Vernon RCMP spokesperson Const. Chris Terleski said in a media release issued today, Dec. 13.

The bomb squad “rendered the item safe in place at around 8:45 p.m.

RCMP don't say what kind of explosives were found.

A 28-year-old man arrested at the scene. He’s been remanded in custody and scheduled to appear in court later this month.

RCMP don’t say what charges the accused is facing.
