The RCMP is investigating after a suspected explosive device was found inside a vehicle in Vernon earlier today.

On Dec. 12, around 10:30 a.m., the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP was dispatched to the parking lot of a business at the 2700 block of 43 Avenue in Vernon after receiving a report that a man was passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle in the parking lot, according to an RCMP release. RCMP do not identify the business.

The individual was known to police and found to be violating multiple conditions and was arrested.

During his arrest, an officer identified a suspected explosive device within the vehicle. The area was immediately closed off to maintain the safety of the public and the RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit has been consulted.

“Frontline officers have established a safety cordon and we’re asking the public to please avoid the area,” Const. Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, said in the release.

“Our Explosive Disposal Unit Team is expected to arrive later today and the area will remain closed until they are able to examine and safely deal with the item.”

RCMP aren't releasing any further information to the public at this time.
