Vernon RCMP are asking people to keep an eye out for a man with Alzheimer’s who went missing a year ago.

Robert Lee Baines, 83, was reported missing after he left a house on foot on Ponderosa Way in Coldstream on Jan. 2, 2024, according to a press release from police.

Family members tried to find him and when they couldn’t they called the police.

An extensive search was carried out in the neighbourhood and Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park nearby. People searched on foot, in the water and from the air, including a drone search.

“It’s now been over a year since Mr. Baines was first reported missing,” Vernon RCMP Const. Chris Terleski said in the release. "We’re renewing our appeal to remind everyone that Robert is still out there. We’re bringing the case back to the public’s attention, with the hope of generating new leads, finding Robert, and bringing closure to the family."

Baines is described as bald with brown eyes, 5’9” tall, and 200 lb. He was believed to be wearing a green Tilley hat, green jacket, grey undershirt, blue jeans, and brown hiking shoes.

“This continues to be a missing person investigation but finding their loved one deceased is a potential outcome that we are aware of,” Terleski told iNFOnews.ca in an emailed statement.

Anyone with information, including anyone who finds a khaki Tilley hat or brown Merrell hiking shoe is asked to contact RCMP at 250-545-7171.

“If you are out in Kal Park or on Kal Lake and you come across any of these items, please contact police immediately,” Terleski said in the release.

The hat and type of shoe Baines might have been wearing when he went missing that have not been found.
