Vernon RCMP crack down on downtown crime

Vernon RCMP officers focused on reducing crime in the city's downtown core have been busy.

In a nine-day period in April and May, the six officers in the crime reduction unit, along with some general duty cops, have conducted 162 investigations, executed 33 arrest warrants and recovered some stolen property, according to an RCMP media release.

Open drug use, and incidents related to open drug use such as loitering, trespassing and property offences were the predominant issues encountered, RCMP said.

The officers conducted targeted enforcement activities to address crime issues in the downtown core and high crime areas in the city.

"The goal of the (Enhanced Downtown Enforcement Initiative), is to allow us to use a window of targeted enforcement to mitigate and decrease criminal activity in the downtown area as we head into the busy summer months," Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media relations officer Const. Chris Terleski said in the release.

"While we continue to address these issues through a consistent policing approach throughout the year, this targeted effort allows us to reduce crime and ensure downtown Vernon remains a safe and enjoyable place for everyone."
