VERNON - A Vernon couple who decided to take a nap in a vehicle they'd allegedly stolen were picked up by police and arrested.

According to a Vernon RCMP media release police received a call yesterday, April 29, just before 10 a.m. from a concerned citizen who had noticed suspicious behaviour in the area near 2900 Lardeau Way in the city.

When officers arrived at the scene they discovered two people sleeping inside a parked vehicle.

Further investigation revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen about one month ago.

Officers also discovered evidence in the vehicle which indicated the couple were involved in drug trafficking. Both occupants of the vehicle, a man and woman, were arrested without incident.

"Having a keen sense of awareness of your area and surroundings is key to keeping yourself and your community safe," Vernon RCMP spokesperson Const. Kelly Brett said in the media release. "This concerned citizen was aware enough to know that that vehicle and its occupants did not belong in that area and did the right thing by calling police. When something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t, listen to your gut."

The man remains in custody and the woman was released with a future court date. They both face possible charges of possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
