Vernon RCMP arrest alleged impaired driving swerving on Highway 97

Vernon RCMP arrested an alleged impaired driver Sunday afternoon after a member of the public called police and reported a vehicle in front of them swerving on the highway.

According to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release at roughly 3:15 p.m. Jan. 17, a motorist called police to say they were following a vehicle northbound on Highway 97 towards Vernon that was swerving in traffic and had nearly collided with roadway barriers and other vehicles.

RCMP officers conducted a traffic stop and based on their observations of the driver conducted an impaired driving investigation and arrested the 33-year-old driver.

Police determined driver's impairment could have been drug related and called assistance from an RCMP Drug Recognition Expert.

"If you witness concerning driving behaviour, please report it," Vernon RCMP spokesperson Const. Chris Terleski said in a media release. "Everyone plays an important role in keeping our roads safe and reducing impaired driving collisions, injuries, and deaths. We want to thank the public for continuing to report suspected impaired drivers."

The 33-year-old man from Coldstream was released from custody and will appear in court at a later date.
