VERNON - Vernon police nabbed a shoplifter who threatened a loss prevention officer with bear spray in a Walmart.

According to a press release, Vernon North Okanagan RCMP responded to an alleged robbery at the Walmart on 2200 58 Avenue yesterday, June 24, just after 9 p.m. Police allege the suspect tried to shoplift from the store when a loss prevention officer confronted him. The man brandished a can of bear spray, although he did not use it.

The Walmart loss prevention officer sustained minor injuries as she defended herself, RCMP say, while the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.

Police, using detailed descriptions provided by witnesses, tracked the suspect down later that night and took him into custody.

RCMP say Keith Kendall, 30, is charged with attempted robbery, possession of stolen property and failing to comply with a probation order.

He was scheduled to appear before a judge today, June 25.
