VERNON - Mounties were led on a foot chase after a 20-year-old man allegedly robbed a taxi driver at knifepoint in Vernon on Monday.

On April 2, just after 9 a.m, police received a report that a taxi cab driver had just been robbed by a man with a knife around the 2100 block of 32 Street, RCMP spokesperson Const. Kelly Brett says in a media release. The suspect fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

After the 911 call was received, RCMP members quickly flooded the area and located the suspect in question, Brett says.

“The suspect male attempted to evade officers by running through residential yards and the Vernon Creek with the chase ending on 25 Avenue, near the Sterling Business Centre,” Brett says.

The 20-year-old Vernon man was arrested on scene without incident. He was not physically injured.

“Our members did a great job at responding and apprehending the suspect, who they believed was armed with a knife, within minutes,” Brett says. “The male is well known to police and is currently facing criminal charges on other unrelated matters”.

He’s been held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on April 5 for possible charges of robbery, disguising his face with intent to commit an offence and failing to comply with a recognizance order.
