VERNON - Three gateways signs that will welcome drivers to Vernon are nearing completion, with final design touches and concrete work expected to take place when the weather warms.

Final construction of the project was delayed by cold weather, as the installation of concrete blocks at the base of the sign requires a minimum five degrees Celsius to complete.

The signs are located on Highway 6, Highway 97 at the north end of the city and on Highway 97 south of Vernon near the historic Watson House. The latter sign’s location was identified and approved based on the safety requirements of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI).

The bases of the signs include grey concrete bricks mixed with coloured concrete bricks. The concrete structure acts as the main sign face, providing low maintenance and high durability, and will be stamped for a wood effect to reflect the natural and industrial history of the area.

The completed signs will be illuminated at night by lighting and include an interchangeable greeting banner that reads “Welcome/Bienvenue” on the front, and “Come Again” on the back.

The original gateway signs had deteriorated over time and required replacement.

The new signs are consistent with the City’s wayfinding signs, park signage and other brand identifiers.
