KELOWNA – The trial of the former Vernon cop charged with possessing child pornography will start the middle of next month after a brief court appearance today.

Ryan Hampton, 37, faces counts of possession of child pornography, accessing child pornography, attempting to obstruct justice and half a dozen breaches of court orders.

He was arrested in June 2013 and later suspended from the RCMP.

The case began in Vernon Supreme Court but moved to Kelowna earlier this year.

His defence lawyer Jason Tarnow has elected trial by judge alone. It begins in Kelowna July 13. The case was due for a pre-trial conference this morning.

Hampton, who has since resigned from the RCMP, was also arrested Feb. 2 on a different set of charges in Alberta. He was pulled over in Strathmore and charged with impaired driving and possession of stolen police siren and light bar.
