Mothers deserve more than flowers and breakfast and bed this weekend – so if you've got an extra-special mom then treat her to a concert by the Vernon Community Band.

The volunteer musicians are hosting a Mother’s Day concert at the Trinity United Church this weekend and it also coincides with their 38 year anniversary, according to a media release from the band.

“It’s been my privilege to lead this fine collection of musicians since 2001,” conductor Toni Rose said in the release.

“The first band, called The Second Wind Community Band, brought musicians together who had played in high school and wanted to keep playing. Led by Conductor Dave Trimble in 1985, they played all over town. I’m delighted to say we are now a full concert band with a fantastic program... that will appeal to all ages.”

The show on Saturday will also feature virtuoso pianist Borha.

“She plays and improvises with impeccable technique and inspired interpretation; she also composes in any genre,” according to the release. “The audience will be swept away by her prodigious talent.

“Band members have also been cooking up a storm for the bake sale table, available at intermission."

Money raised will go towards a new baritone saxophone, chimes and tympani.

The show begins at 2 p.m. on May 13 at the Trinity United Church. Admission is by donation.
