A vehicle fire in a carport spread to an apartment building in Vernon last week, and now police say the fires are suspicious.
Vernon RCMP and Vernon Fire Rescue were called to a vehicle fire in the 3600 block of 30 Avenue around 7 a.m. on Jan. 3, according to an RCMP media release issued Monday, Jan. 6.
RCMP said the fire started in a vehicle parked in a carport then spread to a second vehicle, eventually reaching the apartment complex.
As a precaution the apartment building was evacuated while crews worked to contain and put out the fire but not before three suites were damaged.
While firefighters were dousing the blaze, some residents noticed their neighbours were missing. A thorough sweep of the building was done and two residents were located and safely evacuate.
No injuries were reported.
“At this time, the fire is being considered suspicious,” Vernon RCMP Cpl. Tania Finn said in the release. “Frontline officers canvassed the area for any video surveillance and we continue to investigate the incident.”
