PARKTON, N.C. - A North Carolina man was fatally shot during an hourslong standoff with police, authorities said Monday.
The standoff with 33-year-old Kevin Anthony Battaglia began about 2 p.m. Sunday when officers went to check on him at his home near Parkton. Battaglia, who was armed and wearing a protective vest, refused assistance and threatened deputies. He started shooting when a deputy went to his car to call for a backup unit, said Robeson County Sheriff Kenneth Sealey.
Battaglia then barricaded himself inside his home and continued shooting. One trooper was shot in his safety vest, taken to a hospital and released, said State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Patty McQuillan.
Bullets fired by Battaglia also struck several patrol cars and nearby homes, which officers evacuated, Sealey said.
Other details have not been released. Questions such as where Battaglia was shot, who killed him and how many bullets were fired will be answered by the investigation, McQuillan said.
News outlets report that officers went to Battaglia's home after he was seen carrying a rifle, and the standoff ended around midnight.
Parkton is about 15 miles (25 kilometres) south of Fayetteville.
