NEW YORK, N.Y. - Eli Roth says his new movie "Aftershock" creates a "real, new business model" that could help independent films hold their own against studio blockbusters.
Roth co-wrote, produced and stars in the horror film opening Friday about a group of people who are in a Chilean nightclub when a massive earthquake strikes, resulting in deadly chaos.
"Aftershock" was made for $2 million — a small percentage of what Roth has spent on studio films he has directed, produced and appeared in.
He says that by filming in Chile instead of Hollywood, they ended up using fewer people on the production. They also filmed with inexpensive SLR cameras fitted with very good lenses. And "Aftershock" is being released in theatres, iTunes and Video On Demand on the same day with minimal advertising.
